What is a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)?

A Forward Deployed Engineer is a software engineer who embeds with a customer to build, integrate and ship software or AI in the customer's own environment.

Definition

Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) is a delivery model in which engineers work directly with a customer, often in the customer's tools and on their data, to turn a product or a model into a working production system. The engineer is "forward deployed" because they sit close to the problem rather than behind a product roadmap.

What an FDE does

  • Scopes ambiguous customer problems into something that can be built and measured.
  • Connects to unfamiliar systems and messy data, including legacy infrastructure.
  • Writes and deploys production code: integrations, data pipelines, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems and AI agents.
  • Evaluates and monitors the system after launch, and reports field learnings back to the product or delivery team.

Forward deployed engineer vs. solutions engineer

A solutions engineer usually supports a sale with demos and proofs of concept. A forward deployed engineer is responsible for the deployment itself and writes production code in the customer's environment.

Origins

The role is widely associated with Palantir. AI labs and enterprise software companies now use similar teams to move AI from prototype to production.

Hiring an FDE provider

Companies can hire an individual FDE, engage an embedded FDE pod from a provider, or use a broader AI implementation partner. FDE Providers lists teams that offer this work, with their capabilities, technologies, industries and engagement models, so you can compare them against your own requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

A forward deployed engineer works inside or alongside a customer's team to scope ambiguous problems, connect to messy data and legacy systems, write production code, and get a working system deployed. They also feed what they learn back to the product or delivery team.

What is the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a solutions engineer?

A solutions engineer typically supports the sales process with demos, proofs of concept and technical guidance. A forward deployed engineer is accountable for building and shipping a working deployment in the customer's environment, and writes production code.

Who pioneered the forward deployed engineer role?

The role is widely associated with Palantir, which embedded engineers with government and enterprise customers. AI labs and enterprise software companies have since adopted similar models for deploying AI.

When should a company hire an FDE provider instead of an employee?

External FDE providers fit when you need production deployment experience quickly, the work is bounded by a project or phase, or you want a team (an FDE pod) rather than one individual. Hiring in-house fits when the system is long-lived and core to your product. The assessment on this site compares build, hire and partner options for your situation.
